With a family background of PA Dutchmen and Lithuanians, I was steeped in our amazing cuisine from the time I dropped my bottle. Yeah, I was that kid at lunch with hamloaf sandwiches, stuffed cabbage, pierogies, and around Thanksgiving, the crowd pleasing pig stomach. So, as you might expect, the gastronomic prospect of spending a few months in California was, well, troubling. That is until my latest trip to the grocery store.

I’m not much of a snack food guy, but running into a bag of Snyders of Hanover’s Honey Mustard & Onion Pretzel Pieces sent me on a hunt all around the supermarket. Soon, I discovered all sorts of goodies: Mrs. T’s Pierogies, PA Dutch brand Potpie Noodles, and even Seltzer’s Lebanon Bologna! (In a final twist of irony, some of the tortilla chips were from Hanover as well!) I still haven’t found the elusive Tastykake, Turkey Hill Ice Cream, or PA Dutch brand Birch Beer, but I’m looking my friends. Oh yes, I’m looking.

PS – These Californians don’t get it that real pot pie is “slippy” and crustless.

Since I found myself at the local Superfresh today, I picked up some manufactured-in-PA stuff specifically for Pennsylvaniavore month – assuming I’ll want to eat a more varied diet than Anselma’s flour can offer.

I got some Snyders of Hanover chips, Dietz & Watson deli meat (ok, better not wait till August 1 to eat that), Scaramuzza’s fresh-frozen pasta, Mrs. T’s pierogies, Turkey Hill ice cream, some Lancaster County honey, and a loaf of delicious Martin’s potato bread (guess I should eat that soon too).

Note to self: see about touring the Mrs. T’s factory!
