Celebrate Pennsylvania Day March 4
Why doesn’t Pennsylvania celebrate itself better? That’s the question that inspired me to suggest the creation of a special state holiday, Pennsylvania Day.
It seems like there’s a holiday for just about everything. Penguin Awareness Day, National Pie Day, National Meth Day, Secretary’s Day, Talk Like A Pirate Day, and the list goes on.
I decided that Pennsylvania deserves its own special day, too, because I think it’s the greatest state ever. And lots of people agree with me.
I picked March 4 as the date because it’s the anniversary of when William Penn got his mitts on the land charter in 1681. The other date I considered was December 12, because that’s when we officially became a state in 1787. That date has the advantage of numerical elegance, but nobody wanted another party obligation in the middle of the sparkle season. So March 4 it is.
My idea to give Pennsylvania its own holiday has been snowballing for the past couple of years, and this year I want to make it happen. Here’s how you can join the PA Day movement:
- Plan your own PA Day party, picnic, parade, 5K run, or whatever. PA expatriates, you can do this, too! Wherever you’re living now, you can share your appreciation of Pennsylvania with your friends and neighbors.
- Add to this blog by sending me your own reflections about the state. (email those to pennsylvaniaday at gmail dot com along with a photo of you I can post and a one or two sentence bio)
- Send your ideas for a PA Day party to share here (same email as above).
- Give us a link on your own site! We welcome friends and sponsors.
In the meantime, my fellow contributors and I will use this blog to call your attention to some of the fun, amazing, tasty, and wondrous things in our great state.
cheers!
-Jen

i love the PA Day idea. one suggestion: you should publicize the date, March 4, more on this blog. it should be on the home page or in the ‘about’ section, or something. it’s hard to find it!
thanks.
